Frequently Asked Questions

Extension of the Gas Supply System in Chelsea

What is the reason for extending the system and for the project?

The extension will complete the supply system loop  in this sector by linking the main lines located to the east of the sector with those in the centre of Chelsea. This objective  is a key factor in ensuring the system’s security and reliability, and the maintenance of adequate pressure in the system to the north of the Gazifère franchise. The loop  will also have the advantage of ensuring the reliability of the natural gas system in view of the rising demand in the municipality.

The project will enable Gazifère to:

1) establish a loop that will ensure the safety and reliability of the system throughout the northern sector; and

2) enhance the system’s capacity to meet the rising demand in Chelsea.

When will the work be done in Chelsea?

Several approvals are needed to move ahead with a system extension project. After demonstrating the need for this project and its importance, Gazifère received official approval from the Régie de l’énergie on June 9, 2021. Gazifère plans to start work in Chelsea once all of the appropriate permits have been issued. We expect to be able to begin the work in August 2021, and for it to take approximately five months.

Where will the new underground main line be installed?

The new main line will follow a section of route 105, at a minimum depth of 0.9 metres. Most of the 219 mm diameter polyethylene line will be buried in municipal road easements. In the few cases where it be positioned on private property, the owners have been notified of the situation, and have signed a servitude.

Has Chelsea consented?

The general outline has been approved by the Municipality of Chelsea.

Will the work obstruct access to my home?

The installation of the underground main lines to a great extent relies on the use of a directional drilling technique* to minimize disruptions to residents and businesses. The drilling path is determined ahead of time by experts based on an analysis that takes into account measurements and data that help determine the exact location and angle of the main lines while avoiding any underground obstacles. Given that there is no need to dig a trench, this is the preferred technique as it avoids any disruptions around the municipality. There is practically no need for landscaping repairs after the main line has been installed. In addition, that particular installation technique reduces the amount of time it takes to get the work done and to clear the area after a day’s work.

* This technology is the preferred technology during the entire project unless a situation beyond our control requires us to use another approach.

Who will be responsible for the landscaping once the work is completed?

We always do as little excavating as possible on a property. You can rest assured that any damage will be repaired once the work is completed. Gazifère will restore your property to its original state, weather permitting, at our expense.

Why did you conduct a septic inventory and monitoring of artesian wells?

As a precautionary measure, we have conducted a septic inventory and are monitoring artesian wells before and after the project to ensure that drilling and pipe installation do not impact septic systems.

Will the new gas line interfere with other underground services connected to my home?

For your safety, we work with our authorized partners to ensure that essential underground services are identified and marked before installing the new natural gas line, if applicable.  As for private services, our inspector will carry out the verification with the owners concerned as things progress.

Always make sure that markings, flags or stakes are not moved or altered during the work of installing the natural gas line.

What are the advantages of natural gas?

Natural gas is energy efficiency! There is a wide range of available equipment, all of which not only run on the least expensive energy but are also highly efficient. The supply system extension project in Chelsea could mean significant savings for homes and businesses located near the main lines because it will enable them to replace more polluting combustibles, such as propane or fuel oil while avoiding heavy truck transport.

Natural gas is also hassle-free, endless service! No cistern to install or refill to provide since the service is offered by pipeline, therefore underground. You will never run out of natural gas. So you can extend your summers, or each of your evenings, throughout the year and for as long as you want.

By 2050, Gazifère will be the first natural gas distributor in North American to offer a system 100% comprised of green and renewable energies. Since January 2020, the system has been carrying 1% RNG, and Gazifère intends to reach the 50% mark by 2030.

What is renewable natural gas (RNG) and what is its impact on the environment?

As defined in the Act respecting the Régie de l’énergie, renewable natural gas is “methane from renewable sources with interchangeability characteristics that allow it to be delivered by a natural gas distribution system”.

RNG is natural gas produced from organic waste (biomass) from farms, forests, landfill sites and water treatment plants. The gas is captured, cleaned and injected into the gas distribution system to be used for the same applications as conventional natural gas: heating, hot water, drying, BBQs, fireplaces, etc.

This 100% renewable energy has many environmental advantages:

  • It is entirely renewable;
  • It can be produced locally;
  • It limits greenhouse gas emissions because it is not fossilized;
  • It recovers methane emissions from the landfilling of organic waste.
How do I sign up for RNG?

Gazifère invites you to participate in making a change. You can now contribute to creating a clean environment by choosing renewable natural gas to power your home or business.

It’s flexible! Choose your consumption percentage: 1%, 5%, 10% or 100%. It’s up to you!

No need to change your equipment! It’s simple, this energy source is transported and used the same way as natural gas, but it’s green.

Can my home or my business be connected to the natural gas supply system?

Yes. Our representatives will be pleased to review your application and explain how it all works. If the main line passes close to the service address and consumption levels are considered high enough, the connection could be made at no cost.
