Extension of the Gas Supply System in Chelsea
Ever since natural gas was brought to Chelsea in 2016, several residential and commercial development projects have taken shape, helping this sector develop and at the same time increasing the demand for energy sources such as natural gas. Gazifère is proud to contribute to the expansion of all these projects and to the circular economy!
Natural gas is an economical energy source, in fact the least expensive of them all. It enables local businesses to save and reinvest, and to then pass on the benefits to residents by offering more products and services! In addition, our energy is less polluting than other types, such as fuel oil and propane, which helps reduce CO2 emissions.
Gazifère also intends to become, by 2050, the first natural gas distributor in North America to offer a system 100% comprised of green and renewable energies.
The extension will complete the supply system loop in this sector by linking the main lines located to the east of the sector with those in the centre of Chelsea. This objective is a key factor in ensuring the system’s security and reliability, and the maintenance of adequate pressure in the system to the north of the Gazifère franchise. The loop will also have the advantage of ensuring the reliability of the natural gas system in view of the rising demand in the municipality.
Since March 1st, 2022, the work has been officially completed.
In the spring, our team will be back on site to repair any damage.
The installation of underground main lines to a great extent relies on the use of a directional drilling technique* to minimize disruptions to residents and businesses. The drilling path is determined ahead of time by experts based on an analysis that takes into account measurements and data that help determine the exact location and angle of the main lines while avoiding any underground obstacles. Given that there is no need to dig a trench, this is the preferred technique as it avoids any disruptions around the municipality. There is practically no need for landscaping repairs after the main line has been installed. In addition, that particular installation technique reduces the amount of time it takes to get the work done and to clear the area after a day’s work.
* This technology is the preferred technology during the entire project unless a situation beyond our control requires us to use another approach.

Gazifère has made great strides in its transition, aiming to offer, by 2050, a system 100% comprised of green and renewable energies, namely by distributing renewable natural gas (RNG). Since January 2020, the system has been carrying 1% RNG, and Gazifère intends to reach the 50% mark by 2030. From now on, you can participate in making the change and you too can contribute to a better environment by choosing renewable natural gas.
